ON THE EVE OF ART BASEL 2025 - MIAMI BEACH, SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING TRULY ICONIC

Miami enters the most important week of the year. Art Basel Miami Beach begins and the entire city transforms into a world capital of art, even surpassing New York, London and Paris. Miami dresses itself in art from the skyline to the sand and together with Miami Beach it creates a cultural force that leads the global art calendar. This happens because Miami has stability, law and order, and an organized rhythm that allows art to flourish safely and vibrantly. Everything is ready for visitors from all over the world.

This year the week begins with extraordinary news. Katsushika Hokusai’s Great Wave has just been sold again for a record price, confirming once more that this is the most iconic painting of humanity. The Great Wave is not only a masterpiece in technique. It carries our collective soul, our emotions, our fragility and our strength. It shows how a single image can travel through centuries and still guide us. If you wish, please visit my Thanksgiving article where I speak about the sale and about the symbolism of the wave.

Art Basel week invites us to look for creations that uplift us in the same way. Something iconic is unforgettable. Something iconic impacts you every time you see it. Something iconic fills the spirit instead of draining it. That is the true purpose of art and the reason thousands of artists and galleries come each year to Miami.

If you are visiting, remember that there are hundreds of fairs and exhibitions. It is impossible to see them all. Personally I will only be visiting Art Basel, Art Miami and Design Miami because these three alone are already overwhelming and essential for understanding the direction of contemporary art. There is also a surrealistic artist opening his exhibition in his own gallery and I hope to stop by if time allows.

If you see me there, say hello. I am Ana from Miami Art Reviews and William will be with me. If any gallery, artist or visitor would like to coordinate a meeting you can write to miamiartreviews@gmail.com and we can choose the best day.

As we walk through this intense week, I invite you to pay attention to three questions. Is this artwork unforgettable or will I forget it after ten steps. Does this artwork truly impact me emotionally or is it only loud. Does this artwork fill my soul or leave me empty. Your inner response is important because we are all part of this experiment. The art world changes every year and we are searching for pieces that inspire us, guide us and make us grow, not confuse us.

We are hungry for hope and inspiration. Art is one of the few forces that can propel us into new creation, not only in painting but in every field of life. When we look at art that carries real meaning, it reminds us of who we are and what we can still become.

Please visit my article about the sale of the Great Wave and leave me a comment or send a message to miamiartreviews@gmail.com. I would love to hear what you found during Art Basel, which artists you discovered and what you think is missing or evolving.

Miami is ready and the doors open now. Let us look together and see what this year brings. Maybe among all the noise there will be one piece that truly speaks to the soul, one piece that becomes unforgettable, one piece that carries the same power as the Great Wave.
